May 2012 – Legendary European Leadership
Recently the Dutch Centraal Planbureau (CPB) produced its economic forecast: the Dutch economy will perform moderately and the current economic recession will continue at least till the second half of this year. That news caused further suspense and fear among the consumers and citizens. Will I have my job at the end of this year, can I pay off my rent or mortgage? People experience this kind of news, especially within a period of crisis in Europe, as threatening. They want to get a grasp of their own lives, focus on their own world, and incline to feelings of nationalism. What European dream? Nevertheless, openness and flexibility is the solution for better times. Furthermore, a feeling of hope and of being part of a larger entity is needed, by which people will exceed their own interest. More than ever the Dream of Europe, combined with good leadership is the answer to the current crisis. Who can inspire us to propagate this ideal successfully?

March 2012 – Beyond Career Planning
Where do you stand in three years? What is the goal of your career? Usual questions that young professionals can be asked and that they are supposed to answer quickly and clearly nowadays. Speaking of career planning it is significant that one of the eye-catching Dutch websites talks about career tigers. Like a tiger hunts for his prey, people seem tending to pursue a new job as a steppingstone to the goal of their career, resolutely and calculating. How can that be matched with the unpredictable aspects within life and thereby also within a career?

January 2012 – Building up Society
A silver jubilee, marking 25 years of change, is a fitting moment for reflection. What has changed in the past quarter century? Where does Asset Magazine stand as it celebrates its 25th anniversary? Furthermore, what opportunities and challenges lie ahead as Asset progresses towards its golden jubilee? It would appear that with respect to Tilburg University’s profile as an institution aiming to contribute to the understanding and building of society, Asset Magazine has a significant role to play.

Striving for honor
What would you prefer: striving for money and fame, or striving for ambition and honor? Perhaps, the answer depends on the culture of the company or institution to which you belong. The financial crisis of 2008 showed us that the current ‘what’s in it for me’-culture does not foster honorable behavior (pdf, Asset magazine Volume 26 Edition 5 November-December 2011).

The success of unity in diversity
The current ‘instant society’ does not foster historical consciousness. People ask themselves ‘what is in it for me right now?’ instead of ‘what does this contribute to my life when I consider it from a long term historical point of view?’ This is pre-eminently true of Europe (pdf, Asset Management conference edition September-October 2011).
